A Computer Code to Model Swept Wings in an Adaptive Wall Transonic Wind Tunnel

چکیده
A computer program has been developed to calculate inviscid transonic flow over a swept wing in a wind tunnel with specified normal flow at the walls. An approximately orthogonal computational grid which conforms to the wing and the tunnel walls was developed for application of the JamesonCaughey finite volume algorithm. the full potential equations in fully conservative form using line relaxation. This program is to be used in place of the wind tunnel for preliminary studies of the adaptive wall concept for three dimensional configurations. It can also be used to assess the magnitude of wall interference in a conventional tunnel. Introduction The code solves It is possible to simulate free air flow about a wind tunnel model by controlling inflow and outflow through parous or slotted tunnel walls. correct normal flow distribution changes with model configuration, angle of attack and Mach number and is not known apriori. It has been proposed by Ferri and Barontil and by Sears2 to match the flow field provided by the tunnel to a computed flow field beyond the tunnel walls by an iterative adjustment of the boundary conditions at the interface of these two regions. This wedding of the wind tunnel and the computer eliminates the major problems associated with using either of these tools by itself, namely the incorrect flow constraints of the tunnel walls, and the inaccuracy andlor the expense of near field flow calculation, particularly for transonic flow and separated flow. EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF EFFECTS OF WALL POROSITY AND SUCTION ON THE FLOW QUALITY IN A TRANSONIC WIND TUNNEL
A trisonic wind tunnel has been modified to improve its flow quality when operating at transonic speeds through perforated walls and side suctions. The usefulness of such a perforated wall, already known, is reduction of the blockage effect as well as the shock elimination. Two types of perforated walls have been used in this investigation. The first wall had a porosity of about 22% and the hol...

This article presents analytical and computational analysis of the influence of the wind tunnel walls on transonic airfoil tests. The goal is to quantify the effects of the wind tunnel walls and characterize the key parameters affecting the flow field in order to construct a numerical model to realize experimental data corrections. Firstly, the experimental data are compared with well-documente...
متن کاملWind Tunnel Investigation of Pressure Distribution and Transition Position of a Swept 3D Wing
Extensive wind tunnel tests are conducted to evaluate surface pressure distribution of a semi span swept wing. The wing section has a laminar flow airfoil similar to NACA 6-series airfoils. The investigations are conducted at various speeds and angles of attack. Surface pressure distribution over the wing upper surface is measured for both chordwise and spanwise sections. Statistical analyses a...
متن کاملStatic Aeroelastic Analysis of Transonic Wind Tunnel Models Using Finite Element Methods
A computational method for accurately predicting the static aeroelastic deformations of typical transonic transport wind tunnel models is described. The method utilizes a finite element method (FEM) for predicting the deformations. Extensive calibratiodvalidation of this method was carried out using a novel wind-off wind tunnel model static loading experiment and wind-on optical wing twist meas...

In the German Aerospace Center, DLR, an internal project has been launched to investigate different UCAV configurations. One aspect, covered by the Institute of Aeroelasticity and the Institute of Aerodynamics and Flow Technology, is the wind tunnel test of a UCAV wing in subsonic and transonic flow. The model shall show measurable static aeroelastic deformations. Main goals of the tests will b...
